The Lady and the Unicorn Medieval Tapestry
One of the most famous and admired tapestries the Lady and the
Unicorn part 6 of the series in Musée du Cluny.
Woven in the mille fleurs style, the six tapestries are
amongst the national treasures of France displayed in their
own circular room at the museum.
These 12’ high masterpieces were lost until 1844 when discovered
they were
purchased by The Cluny Museum. Each tapestry panel illustrates the 5 human senses, the latter
6th tapestry pictured above titled ‘Mon Seul Desir’ (My
Sole Desire) is the most complex and perhaps pertains to the
6th sense or esoteric meaning.
A Tapestry was once used to decorate the austere walls of their
castles or as insulation in the more comfortable quarters, today a
tapestry is a unique decorating accent.
